so may is here, which means it’s time for the background of my laptop to shift. in my typical style, i’ve been grouping up my photos, and getting excited for everything they “represent.” clearly i’m digging that whole red, black, green, and yellow color pattern… basically the jamaican flag. instead of rambling on about nothing for a long time i’m just going to cut myself off until my next post, in which there will actually be a real purpose. unlike this post… (but i did put effort into “collecting” these photos, i swear!)

if any of you happen to be fans of the breakfast club, then you may or may not know that yesterday was the 30th anniversary of this group’s fateful meeting. since i’m kind of obsessed with this movie and can watch it repeatedly, i figured i’d kick off this post with the ending scene, because watching it makes me feel like everything is right in the world.
fun fact: i love elvis. i don’t know how or why, but i just do, even though no one else in my family does… so this buzzfeed article may or may not have had me freaking out a little bit.
LOVE this whole entire look.
do i have a reason to wear this dress? not really… will i get this dress? probably not. do i want it? 100% yes.
this collaboration between jimmy fallon and billy joel is pure perfection.
this trick to getting a great high ponytail is on point.
counting down the days until i can go back to this restaurant, one of my favorites in the city.
this song is my current obsession, and if you haven’t listened to augustines (formerly we are augustines) i recommend you do.
i’m all about those buzzfeed quizzes, so when they released a friday night lights version i was all over it. it was posted a while ago, but it’s too good not to include. i got tami taylor (hallelujah) and my brother got tim riggins, so i’d say it’s pretty accurate.
once i finish my current vegan diet (which i’ll talk about later) i will basically be on a baking and cooking frenzy, and this dip will without a doubt be made.
THIS MOVIE CANNOT COME OUT SOONER.

i’ll admit i’ve been gone for a while, over two weeks, which in the blogging world is basically like eternity. i have a good explanation for my absence though, and if you remember from an earlier post i did, i was away on spring break doing something a little different… last week was spent road tripping between louisiana and mississippi, visiting places like new orleans, natchez, baton rouge, breaux bridge, and mowata. i hadn’t heard of half of these places before i went on this trip, but now i love them. first things first i set really high expectations for spring break, and the trip definitely lived up to it. coming from long island i was expecting the south to be totally different, and it was, but in the best way possible.
from the first day of break we ate a lot of food, and all of it was good. i love seafood so i was excited, but i had no idea what i was in for… let me just say if you’ve never had crawfish please do, because it was life changing. i also ate alligator sausage, which was one of the most delicious things i’ve ever had in my life, and the same goes for boudin (look up the pronunciation, i totally butchered it). we spent time exploring new orleans, especially the french quarter, which was unlike anything else i’ve ever been to… the same goes for bourbon street, which i thought was wild when we went out, but was actually considered quiet or calm by new orleans standards. natchez is a historic city in mississippi that has gorgeous antebellum homes, a great mexican restaurant, and a saloon that dates back to the days of mark twain to name a few things. the under the hill saloon was right next to the mississippi river, and when you walked in you felt like you were going back in time… not to mention they had a foosball table so i was more than a fan (if you’re ever in natchez, you have to go). after natchez we went to breaux bridge, crawfish capital of the world and hometown of my boy, hunter hayes. that night we stayed in an actual cabin on the bayou and went to a cajun pig roast. there was a live band and white lights strung throughout the trees… basically by the end of the night i felt like i was in some sort of nicholas sparks movie. the next morning we got up and went to another town in louisiana and experienced crawfish and rice farming, which was made complete by actually getting on the crawfish boat, picking our own crawfish to eat, cooking it on the spot, and even taking my first tractor ride.
i’ve condensed this a LOT, because i could honestly go on and on… to sum it all up though, if i could write a love letter to the south it would go a little like this:
i love you, i love you, and i’ll be back as soon as i can.
(so dramatic, i know)

i could easily start off with a long and rambling introduction, but i think i’m going to cut to the chase on this one (so out of character, i know)…
i’ve heard amazing things about this book, so i think it’s time to finally read it.
if you haven’t been able to tell by this point, i’m a bit of an emotional girl… so when i saw this link with questions you should ask your mom it made me a tad bit homesick. shoutout to my mama, i love ya!
if i had an actual house or apartment, this would most likely go in it, but since i don’t i’ll just pretend i do.
i get the feeling that pointed toe pumps would be an extremely painful experience for me, but i still love how they look with a pair of skinny jeans and a white top. when i saw this post on design darling it got me dreaming again…
if you don’t listen to bastille, it’s time to get on that.
snl’s brooks whelan made a really cool video showing the entirety of his 2013, including his hiring by the snl team. he seems like a cool guy, but this video definitely confirms it.
i saw this video of a little boy crying to “say something” and i kid you not, this will be my child. my mom definitely passed her emotions on to me, and future children i’m so sorry, but i think it might happen to you. please watch this video, he’s so adorable.
paul rudd and jimmy fallon are everything.
i have been waiting for the season premiere of game of thrones for what feels like forever… hbo released these posters for the new season and the season cannot get here fast enough.
last, but not least, i discovered this dress and i am in love… if i was a maxi dress, this would be it.

in about two weeks i’ll be heading down south for a very special kind of spring break: a true southern road trip. we’re starting off in new orleans, and driving throughout mississippi and louisana. being from new york i already know that this experience will be very different from long island life… something along the lines of “toto, i don’t think we’re in kansas anymore.” anyways, as you guys most likely know by this point i like to imagine what music we’ll be listening to while driving from place to place (i’m thinking something that resembles a combo of johnny cash and indie rock), what i’ll be wearing (and whether or not it has the right “vibe”… no, but really), and what will make the final packing list. so as i prepare for the southern sunshine there are a few things that need to be taken care of, specifically the whole sunglasses situation. last year after a particularly rowdy day at school my trusty aviators went missing, and although i replaced them i’ve been looking for a new pair since in the hopes of trying something different. this is where warby parker. if you have not heard of warby parker yet, i highly suggest you look them up; the concept is that you can have five types of glasses (sun or optical) sent to you to try on for free. i am the first to admit i can get a little crazy about details, i mean look at my posts on gathering photos, so this whole arrangement is great. so when i started looking through the spring 2014 collection i found a pair that i may or may not have fallen in love with, and these little babies are on their way to good ol’ georgetown for me to test out (fingers crossed they look good). if i could define the reilly’s i think it would be a combination of classic but fun, and more than capable of holding their own on a whirlwind southern adventure. so while i keep on planning (and keep you guys updated) here is my visual (and audio) inspiration for the time being.
*thank you to warby parker for the opportunity to write this post! all opinions are my own (if you couldn’t tell from my rambling)*

i have a tumblr and sometimes going through my dashboard becomes a highly selective process. i’ll like a photo, and save it for later knowing it’ll look better on my page at a different point in time. thoughts run through my head, like “i can’t reblog a photo of this outfit, because i did a fashion photo a minute earlier”, and so on and so forth. i get into this groove, and it makes me feel like an artistic genius, which is far from the truth. i am a creative person, and i wish i could do photography, but it’s something i haven’t tried (except for my instagram, which makes me feel like annie liebovitz at times, all thanks to filters). since i’m not a photographer, i’d like to consider myself to be a curator. when i say curator i mean i gather photos i love, and group them together all over my desktop waiting for a reason to use them. one of those times is now… i was on a black and white photograph kick recently and it got a little bit crazy for a while. as soon as february gets closer i know there will be another “gathering time.” to me it’s fun and even relaxing… there’s something about putting photos together that reminds me of solving a puzzle, certain ones fit and others don’t, but in the end you have to make it work. i’m totally making something that’s not a big deal into an artistic process, but as the saying goes, “imma do me.”

after having monday off because of martin luther king, jr. day, tuesday off for a snow day, delayed openings on wednesday a.k.a. cancelled morning classes, and no class on fridays, i have really only been to classes today. basically i feel like this week has turned into a weekend, and since it feels like a weekend i decided to do my link loving post a little bit earlier than usual. so without further ado, this is what i’ve been looking up:
i feel like i’ve mentioned this before but i love lions. it probably stems from spending a good part of my childhood watching the lion king, but i’m going to be dramatic and call it fate. i’m also a leo, so that helps, and my hair on good and bad days alike can resemble that of a lion’s mane. embracing it has been a lifelong process, but it’s something i’m working on. before i totally tangent, i’ll get back to the point. this video is everything. it’s an encounter between kevin richardson and the lions that love him like family. it’s as crazy and amazing as it sounds, and i’ll admit it had me tearing up.
i recently found these illustrations on instagram and i’m obsessed. the artist, sally spratt, basically paints anything she’s lusting after and it always looks amazing. also, half the time she makes we want everything she’s drawing… so there’s that.
when i study/do work/basically do anything i always listen to music. without it i get really distracted. i have multiple itunes playlists and pandora stations i go through, but last week i found songza and i’m obsessed. depending on the time of day and the day of the week there are different curated playlists and from what i’ve listened to they’re all really good. i’m still pretty new to the site, but these are the playlists i’ve been listening to.
there isn’t much of a description needed for this next link. all that needs to be said is that beyoncé opened up her online store and i proceeded to lose it. here are a few of my favorites: the burnout shirt and the surfboard sweatshirt
oyster is the new netflix for books and my newest obsession. for 9.99 a month you can read anything you want. as someone who loves to read, it’s kind of perfect.
one of the most inspiring commercials i’ve seen, and i promise you’ll love it too.
last summer i was on the hunt for a shark tooth necklace. when i say shark tooth necklace i bet you picture a big white tooth on a black cord with maybe one, or two puka shells. that is not the look i happen to be going for. i finally found one i really liked on etsy, and the store owner has some other amazing pieces too.
just another show to add to the roster. matthew mcconaughey and woody harrelson star in true detective, and after watching the season premiere i’m hooked. i usually try to avoid “scary” shows, but i’m sticking this one out.

i fess up, i have been completely and utterly slacking on this blog. last semester i focused a LOT on schoolwork, and as it got closer to finals that’s where my focus went to. it got to the point where my mom would call me asking what happened to my blog, and i’d respond saying that i knew i was a bit behind, but i would catch up. here’s thing thing, i LOVE blogging, i really do. it’s a great way for me to express my rambling thoughts, show some of my favorite bloggers outfits, put together random photos that “match”, basically anything that comes to my mind comes up on this blog. this randomness is what i love about my life in lipstick, and that’s why i’m getting back on the blogging wagon. one of my new year’s resolutions is finding my balance, and i’m intent on doing that. this balance involves everything: my school life, social life, blogging, health, etc., and i think balance is the perfect word. there have been more than enough times where i felt i was being stretched too thin, and last semester was honestly great because i really did find my balance. i plan on carrying that into this semester, and maintaining my balance. my concluding sentence of this blog needs to be something cliche, and so here is a quote that i love that basically expresses my view on life: embracing change, but finding a balance in everything.
“an arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means it’s going to launch you into something great. so just focus, and keep aiming.”

introducing my new series of blog posts, called “what i’m…” you’re probably wondering what this means, and soon you’ll know, but first i want to address the obvious historical presence in the image above. i am without a doubt a history buff, so going to school in d.c. was a no-brainer for me. i love old buildings, memorials, cities, and places that have stories and history to them, and d.c. has more than its fair share of places with history. while ancient greece and rome hold a special place in my heart, i can say the same for the early united states, the industrial age, the world war II era, and the kennedy era. especially the kennedy era, and since this friday marks the 50 year anniversary of john f. kennedy’s assassination, i found it fitting that there is a kennedy presence in the first of this blog series.
what i’m wearing // the houndstooth sweater jacket pictured above has long since sold out, seeing that it’s from last year, but madewell did something great with this coat. it happens to be one of the comfiest jackets i own, and makes chilly weather more than bearable… (i also love the cold weather so there’s that.)
what i’m reading // i was doing research for a possible paper topic in one of my classes and came across this book. once i get some free time i’m going to start reading it, and i can’t wait. it definitely satisfies the history buff part of me, plus after visiting arlington national cemetery a few times in the last two weeks (and seeing the book in arlington’s gift shop) i am ready to start reading.
what i’m watching // my friend saw parkland on itunes’ movie page, and we decided to watch it. it didn’t get a lot of publicity, but it actually was a really interesting (and good!) movie. the premise is the assassination of jfk and the aftermath, and has great performances from the cast. if you have time or are in the least bit interested, i recommend watching it!
what i’m eating // this recipe on the glitter guide looks absolutely delicious… next trip to the food store, i know what i’m getting.
what i’m decorating // christmas is around the corner and that means decorating is slowly getting under way. i found the cutest etsy store that sells “chalkboard” signs, and their holiday editions happen to be close to perfect. i want every single one.
what i’m wanting // this book, authorized by the new york times, is a compilation of their coverage of the kennedy era, including new essays and a multitude of black and white photos… the kennedy years will most likely be making an appearance on my christmas list.
